INDUSTRY (2005/01 – PRESENT)

Manage, oversee, direct, delegate and monitor engineering design disciplines; ensure on time and on budget completion of deliverables; track and communicate project progress to senior management; responsible for design adequacy, integrity, cost efficiency, safety and maintainability of all design contracts; plan, implement and measure programs of capital projects and consultant contracts; provide leadership to ensure and enhance efficiency of the engineering design division; play active role in the development of operating and capital budget for the division; provide leadership in the delivery of corporate policy on Safety, Quality, People and Cost.

Planned, directed, monitored, lead and took overall responsibility of all activities of Structural Design Section; managed capital work and operating budget assignments; managed complex issues and risks; managed staff and consultant resources; provided expert structural advice and support to other departments and Groups; facilitated conflict resolution and managed stakeholder expectation.

Within the context of an integrated team, provided project lead, structural design lead, performed structural analysis and design, reviewed works carried out by Designers, Technical Staff and Consultants, and offered construction support for various bridge and transit structures in Ontario, Canada.

Nature of Job: Offered consultancy, advisory and expert services relevant to structural design to various industries and organizations through BRTC, BUET. Regularly consulted relevant codes, standards and regulations during the course of various consultancies. In a majority of the consultancies, personally performed structural analysis and design using various standard softwares (STAAD, STRAND) and in-house applications. On many occasions three dimensional analysis results were checked by subsequent analyses by three- and/or two-dimensional analysis software. The integrity of structural modeling was also verified. Emphasised safety issues in projects involving repair and reconstruction. In all cases efforts were made to arrive at an economic design by following the basic tenets of structural mechanics and obeying code provisions. ROADS/AIRPORTS

Repair and Strengthening of Rigid Pavement of Zia International Airport, Civil aviation Authority of Bangladesh (1993-1995)

Consultant and Project Engineer. Responsible for developing methodology for runway repair, strengthening and overlay operation of this runway which was damaged due to heavy bombing and was also subjected to overloading by wide bodied aircrafts.. Prepared tender documents and supervised the nighttime construction keeping the runway operational during the daytime. (The applied nature of this work resulted in one Journal (Performance of Constructed Facilities ASCE) and one conference paper.)

Jamuna Bridge Access Road Widening and Rehabilitation, Roads and Highways Department, Bangladesh (2002)

Team Leader and Stress Analyst.  Evaluated whether it was safe to carry out the construction work on a segment of the road beneath which various diameter gas pipelines existed at varying depths.

The work of the team was to conduct laboratory investigation, non-destructive testing on site on pipe materials, and carry out a thorough numerical study and closed form buckling analysis to understand the state of gas pipelines at worst working condition. Guided and cross-checked the analyses that were carried out by using ANSYS and STRAND software. Accumulated the results, interpreted them and proposed suitable safe construction techniques for carrying out the work. (This work resulted in a paper in ASCE Pipelines 2003 Conference in Maryland in 2003.)

Cargo Village, Zia International Airport, Civil aviation Authority of Bangladesh (1994)

Consultant involved in the evaluation of prequalification applications for Cargo Village.

MARINE STRUCTURES

Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation, Eastern Refinery Limited, Chittagong, Bangladesh (2003)

Performed structural design checking of breasting dolphin, mooring dolphin, platform and approach way of Jetties of RM5 and RM6 at Patenga, Chittagong Port, Bangladesh.  Chittagong Port is the most important seaport of Bangladesh and has access from the Bay of Bengal. Design of a total of four Breasting Dolphins, four Mooring Dolphins, Bollars, Fenders and a Platform were independently carried out to check the original design performed by Gammon (India). The design of these RCC structures supported on steel piles were performed complying to BS6349 (Maritime Structures). Computer models were developed using the finite element software : STAAD-Pro. Breasting Dolphins were designed for berthing force (reaction from fender) under normal and extreme conditions. Mooring Dolphines were designed for 80 Ton mooring force. The jetties were designed to accommodate a ocean tanker having a maximum length of 190 m in a seismically active geographic area, which also has a design wind speed of 200 km/hr. A systematic regimen of analyses was conducted by changing the configuration and slope of piles in order to arrive at a safe and economic design solution.

BRIDGE

Paisarhat Bridge over River Paisa, Roads & Highways Department, Barishal, Bangladesh (2000)

As a bridge engineer carried out the complete structural analysis and design of the multi-lane multi-span Precast Prestressed Concrete bridge over mighty river Paisa.  Slab-on-girder as superstructure and caisson as foundation were designed. AASHTO Code was followed in the design.

STEEL SPACE FRAME/ TOWERS

Dhaka Modern Planetarium, Public Works Department, Bangladesh (2003)

 

As Team Leader and designer, checked the structural design of a space frame of the planetarium complex. A 3-D finite element model developed using STAAD-Pro was analysed under various loads. Results were compiled. Member and member connections were designed for relevant load combinations.  Design guidelines and specifications for steel sections had been based on American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC).

Channel Tunnel (England-France) Track Base, Eurotunnel (1991).

Channel Tunnel is a fixed link joining England and France across the English Channel. This 50 km long railway tunnel was built in 1994. As a Stress Analyst carried out detailed analysis on a segment of Channel Tunnel track base.

Nature of Job: Structural Designer and Engineering Advisor engaged in the structural and foundation design, and construction management of a large number of reinforced concrete frame structures, ranging from six storied to eighteen stories. All these buildings had different architectural layouts as well as vertical and/or horizontal asymmetry. Three-dimensional modeling was adopted during the course of analysis. Provided advisory services related to project procurement, construction planning, quality control, documentation and top engineering management of these projects.

SQUARE HOSPITAL

Square Hospital (18-storeyed RC high-rise building along with 3 basements, 1998-2004)

As Structural Engineer and Construction Coordinator involved in the planning, structural design, foundation design and construction of a US$65 million Hospital (in joint collaboration with Methodist Hospital South, Memphis, USA) in Dhaka. Maintained liaison with the Healthcare architecture designer (The Richie Organization of USA) and construction stage Hospital Operator  (Bumrungrad Hospital of Thailand), and ensured quality construction. Design and construction involved deep excavation and incorporation of major changes in the built structure.

University of Exeter and BUET

Initiated and managed a Higher Education Link (HEL) titled Building Safer Houses in Rural Bangladesh between BUET and University of Exeter (UK). Department for International Development (DFID) of the British Government financed the HEL.

Planned and supervised a series of wind tunnel tests in the testing facilities of University of Exeter.

Conducted several workshops and hands-on sessions, and carried out research on environmentally friendly, socially acceptable and affordable hazard-resistant house building technologies with special consideration to the developing world scenario.

Organised three international conferences in Dhaka and Exeter.
